29th Nov 2019 #BUWA DEPRESSION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

#BUWA DEPRESSION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

HA BOI Productions (Pretoria), Livewire Records (Botswana) and FLYWEH Records (Cape Town) have started a new campaign initiative named #BUWA Depression Awareness Campaign. The campaign aims to increase awareness around the issues of stress, depression, and anxiety by encouraging those suffering and experiencing depression to talk to somebody and express their feelings and disclose their mental health condition as a first step and attempt to find a lasting solution.

The campaign was inspired by a song, named BUWA by Mojelo Mojelo, a recording artist, producer, activist and HA BOI operations’ Officer. The song was written in Setswana one of South Africa’s eleven languages, following a discussion during the recording of the song where Chantty Natural of Livewire Records was asked a question about his suggestion for a song topic. His response was, “write it in Setswana and write about depression and how people are afraid to talk about the mental and emotional issues they face.” The song was then completed and listening to it led to discussions about the topic and how a campaign that deals with the stigma of depression and the fear of talking, would help our society and community out. And that is how the campaign was born.

The campaign is run by three multimedia production companies based in the Gauteng Province, Cape Town, and Gaborone Botswana. The objective is to use our multimedia content creation skills to build awareness content material that can reach out to a wide audience and encourage world discourse around the issue of depression. We intend through the campaign to shine a light on one of the hardest yet easiest things to do, SPEAKING. Talking to someone you trust about how you feel regarding life problems and your mental health can help destigmatize mental health issues and also increase the number of people learning the importance of seeking professional help when appropriate.

The campaign will do this through, using multimedia messaging, running workshops, seminars, events, using message music and other art forms. Artists from all walks of life will join in the pledge by using their craft to send a message. “BE THE ONE” program will later be implemented, which will be a program that looks at building support for people living with depression, using pledging supportive individuals and institutions, while also using technology to reach out to an ever more modern wide audience.

The Campaign will also fundraise, for a web site, and digital online app, that will be geared at using the latest app development and social media technology to help people suffering from depression, by linking them to responsive support. Social media, radio, print media, TV, Cinemas, events and festivals are some of the platforms that the campaign will use to share messages with a wider audience.

A Network of stakeholders will be formed to maximize mobilization, reach and support for the campaign’s programs: (The following stakeholders will be approached to partner on the event)

  • Rehabilitation centers
  • NGOs
  • Government ministries
  • Foundations
  • House of Traditional leaders
  • Private health Institutions
  • Health Research Institutes
  • Political Parties
  • Religious Institutions
  • Youth Agencies
  • Institutions of Learning
  • Private Sector Business
  • Media
  • Artists

Your pledge to support the campaign will be highly appreciated. #BUWA
